Counseling and Therapy

Mental Health Treatment at NSG

At Neurocognitive Specialty Group, our goal is to help patients better understand their cognitive functioning and learn to cope with and manage their mental health condition. Through a personal interview and in-depth psychological evaluation, our doctors work to assess the patient’s unique needs and determine the most suitable course of treatment.

Whether treating in-house (such as with short-term treatment for memory decline) or referring out (such as for weekly regular talk therapy sessions), our licensed neuropsychologists are committed to helping patients and their loved ones get the help and support they need.

Counseling and Therapy Services

As professional neuropsychologists, our team focuses on providing psychological evaluations and psychotherapy (or talk therapy) to patients struggling with mental illness or brain injuries. This should not be confused with psychiatry, which involves the treatment of mental illness through prescription medication. Depending on the patient and condition, both psychological and psychiatric treatment may be needed.

Types of counseling and therapy include:

  • Individual Counseling
    • Also known as psychotherapy or talk therapy, individual counseling is one-on-one treatment between a patient and their mental health professional. Treatment sessions focus on helping patients understand how their brain may be functioning, working through difficult feelings or emotions, and then developing effective coping strategies and goals for improvement.
  • Group Counseling
    • Group counseling or group therapy is, as the name implies, therapy performed as a group supervised by a licensed mental health professional. These sessions allow for patients to explore their feelings or shared experiences in a safe and welcoming environment. Types of group counseling include Cognitive Rehabilitation Groups, Dementia Caregiver Support Groups, and more.
  • Telehealth
    • This type of mental health treatment has been rising in popularity as technology for remote communication improves in quality and ease of use. Telehealth allows for patients to virtually meet with their mental health professional and receive care from the comfort of their own homes. Telehealth counseling and therapy makes mental health treatment more accessible as individuals are able to seek help virtually from anywhere and at any time of the day.
